Written by Horacio Mezziga

On March 19, 2012  will begin an introductory  beekeeping course, organized by the Cooperative CALAPIS with support from the Rural Development Division of the Administration of Paysandu. The classes will be theoretical and practical during  two weeks.

Baruch Lucero, manager of the Renaissance Beekeeping Association, said that with the affiliation of more members 789 join the organization from the the municipalities Tulum, Bacalar and Othon Blanco, the estimated production of 350 tons would be sent to a chain in the Midwest and some sold locally. He also commented that the production season officially began on Tuesday with an estimated completion in late May or early next July, also estimated that if weather conditions remain as recorded in the last days, will be favorable for flowering of the forests and thus production of quality honey.

During the ceremony, the president of the cooperative said "had not been united, had not succeeded in forming the cooperative," adding that "for us is a very important thing to buy and sell as a whole, to support beekeepers and able to price our honey. "Finally, Ms. Rodriguez said "we are about 18 or 20 producers from  Arroyo Baru, Columbus, Villa Elisa, San Jose and Liebig, with about five thousand hives."

In response to the serious health problems facing honey bees, a Tech-Transfer Team was initiated to work with beekeepers in Northern California. Three trained crop protection agents (the Bee Team) are now established in Butte County working as an extension program of the University of California Cooperative Extension. The Team is part of a nation-wide effort to help the honey bee.

USA- FLY PARASITE THREAT HONEY BEES

Written by Horacio Mezziga

Honey bees can become the unwitting hosts of a fly parasite that causes them to abandon their hives and die after a bout of disoriented, “zombie-like” behavior, San Francisco State University researchers have found. The phenomenon, first observed on the SF State campus, may help scientists learn more about colony collapse disorder (CCD). This mysterious ailment has drastically increased honey bee colony losses across the United States since its discovery in 2006. So far, the fly parasite has only been found in honey bee hives in California and South Dakota, said SF State Professor of Biology John Hafernik. But the possibility that it is an emerging parasite “underlines the danger that could threaten honey bee colonies throughout North America, especially given the number of states that commercial hives cross and are deployed in,” Hafernik and colleagues write in the January 3, 2012 issue of PLoS ONE.
