Some parents have been choosing honey instead of modern cold medicine when it comes to kids’ colds. Allegheny General Hospital pediatrician Dr. TaTanisha Smith said there are pros and cons to honey making a comeback with parents who don’t want to deal with the side effects their kids feel from over-the-counter medications.

Twelve percent of the population claims to have self-medicated with antibiotics in the last year to combat the cold, according to a survey by the Center for Research on Phytotherapy (INFITo), which also reveals that the usual treatment of colds and flu are analgesics and inflammatory, followed by bee products such as propolis and honey.

A group of Brazilian researchers identified a type of bee propolis which proved to be effective, at least in laboratory tests, to combat human leukemic cells. The medicinal properties of the natural substance was identified by a group of researchers coordinated by Yong Park, professor of the Faculty of Food Engineering (FEA) at the University of Campinas Unicamp, which studies the use of propolis since  1995.
