A propolis gel, easy application and low cost, is the bet of a group of researchers of Mina Gerais  to combat the effects, in some cases lethal radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer. Therapy has record in National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), but is awaiting the completion of the last phase of testing, compared to a more popular type of medicine, to gain a scientific protocol that proves its effectiveness.

Researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute attached cell lytic enzymes to food-safe silica nanoparticles, and created a coating with the ability to selectively kill listeria in food handling and packaging. The coating kills listeria on contact, even at high concentrations, within a few minutes without affecting other bacteria, said Solanki et al.
