Bee Health

In response to the serious health problems facing honey bees, a Tech-Transfer Team was initiated to work with beekeepers in Northern California. Three trained crop protection agents (the Bee Team) are now established in Butte County working as an extension program of the University of California Cooperative Extension. The Team is part of a nation-wide effort to help the honey bee.

A new generation of pesticides may be to blame for the catastrophic decline in Britain’s honey bees. The contain chemicals, routinely used on farms and in garden centres make bees more vulnerable to disease, a study has shown. There have been concerns for some years about neonicotinoids, a family of chemicals based on nicotine, but a study by an expert based in the US finally confirms a link. The findings were published by the US government’s top bee expert Dr Jeffrey Pettis, who found that even minute doses of the chemical made bees three times more vulnerable to infections from parasites.

The Purple Balso production is affecting bees in the department, according to the statement made by Luis Fernando Wandurraga, beekeeper resident in the Resumidero. The problem is that the tree produces a bell-shaped flowers where the bees come for nectar but are trapped there. The fast-growing tree is planted to shade the coffee but affects beekeepers

The Great Canary Cabildo wants to control the  wasps that attacks Telde hives and quantify the real damage that these insects have caused the apiaries of the island. Therefore, the insular corporation has already contacted all beekeeping associations and municipal technicians of the 21 municipalities, and is working closely with the industry, produced a map of sightings in order to quantify the actual damages these insects have caused the apiaries of  Great Canary.

After nearly nine months of the submission of material for analysis, the report that will say what caused the deaths of thousands of bees at the end of April last year, in Paulista (43 km of Bauru), still was not ready. The phenomenon, which remains a mystery, happen again, and now responsible for the beekeeper original complaint promises to go to court to discover the cause of the problem.
