Controlled sale pesticide may have killed in recent days at least 300 hives in the city of Iacanga, a town 378 km from São Paulo. The suspicion is that the application of an insecticide in an orange grove near the apiary is responsible for the extermination of millions of bees. Some beekeepers had total loss of the season, which altogether would yield 10 tons of honey producers.

In a report released this week by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Pollination Aware, highlights the significant risks associated with relying on incidental pollination and quantifies the likely demand for paid pollination services should anything happen to these escaped European honeybee populations. Among the most severe threat to agricultural production is that posed by exotic pests and diseases of honeybees, such as the highly destructive Varroa mite.

BRAZIL- PESTICIDE IS CAUSING DEATH OF BEES

Beekeepers in the central region of Sao Paulo believe that the spraying of crops surrounding the hives with pesticides, is causing the deaths of thousands of bees. A group of researchers from two universities are studying the problem.

SPAIN- LOWER BEES POPULATION IN VALENCIA

Environmental factors such as air pollution, as well as human action, have fallen in the interior regions provincial average of bees per hive.
In the Alto Palencia, a leading producer of honey and derivatives of the province, from Ramaders Unió de Llauradors  confirm that both pollution and the installation of phone masts "have caused over the past three years a decline between 10 and 15% in the number of bees. "

Who is to blame for the thinning population? “We are,” Dick Counts executive director of the East Texas Beekeepers Association said. Counts asked for a show of hands from those who had not picked up a can of insecticide at sometime and sprayed into the air. There were none raised. “We’ve been dumping chemicals on this old earth for about 125 years, and it took that long to get the honeybee,” Counts said. “How long is it going to take to get us? ”

Beekeepers across New Brunswick say colonies have bounced back after a devastating year in 2009.
Last spring, many found their bees had died over the winter, but things are looking up this year, beekeepers say. "The bees seem to be really rebounding this year," said Claude Hachey, a honey producer from Bathurst.
