It's obvious that Roderick Taylor is not a beekeeper. It is true that insecticides can and do kill bees, and might well disorient them as he suggests.
But as a retired hobby beekeeper, and a continuing member of the Champlain Valley Beekeepers Association, I know by experience that if one does not control the varroa mites as Tom Spears indicates ("The lowly honeybee deserves a lot more attention," Opinion, March 22) , one does not keep bees. Varroa mites weaken the bees and they become susceptible to viruses, and the whole hive can be lost very quickly.

Me parece hasta algo 'estúpido' el comentario "técnico" de que las abejas no se están muriendo por efecto de los insecticidas. es tan absurdo el comentario que el concepto en sí mismo de 'insecticida' se refiere a que ese (esos) químicos matan insectos.
El que sea efectivo que la varroa causa estaragos por la virosis asociada a ella, NO significa que los insecticidas NO maten a las abejas.
Por favor, no confundamos a los apicultores novatos.

Soy de uruguay ,un bello pais sin duda muy verde y lo llamamos Uruguay Natural, sin embargo mis abejas se mueren o desaparecen en cualquier epoca del año ,si hay entrada de nectar o polen si son fuertes o no ,se muren igual .la situacion es deseperante para aquellas personas que viven de las colmenas solamente sin otros trabajos que compense el gasto familiar .la mayoria de nosotros con un doble problema que es la edad y educacion ,yo a mis 50 años no tengo chanses de conseguir un trabajo digno que tengo que competir con jobenes altamente calificados .entonces seguimos luchando por las abejas y por nosotros .ly yo si puedo probar que los insecticidas me mataron muchas colmenas ,no entiendo lo que quiere decir ete señor ,tenemos que terminar con las varroas y usar insecticidas que sean compatibles o naturales ,sin ser catastrofico todos los abitantes del planeta debemos cuidar a las abejas ,sin ellas no sobreviviremos,gracias
