CANADA- MANITOBA APIARIST PROPOSES TO USE AN INSECTICIDE THAT POSES LESS RISKS FOR THE BEES

Saturday, 28 July 2012 17:19 Written by

Rheal LaFreniere Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (Provincial Apiarist), says another option, in addition to evening spraying, is for the farmers to use the chemical Matador instead of Lorsban. “We have heard more insecticides are being used this year. There are a lot of bee keepers and there’s a few options that pose less risk to the bees,” said LaFreniere. He goes on to explain that Lorsban proves more deadly to the bees because it has a longer residual characteristic, meaning that it has deadly effects 3 days, and up to 5 days after application in cooler temperatures. Matador’s toxic effects are banal as soon as the product dries on the plant, making it a friendlier choice for the environment.
