USA- A NEW THREAT TO HONEY BEES, THE PARASITIC PHORID FLY APOCEPHALUS BOREALIS
Bees infected with parasites were found all over California last year and Temecula -- where honeybees are prevalent -- may be no exception, a zoologist said this week. Prof. John Hefernik, an entomologist at San Francisco State University said researchers accidentally discovered "zombie-like" bees that became infected with a fly parasite. Hence the nickname "Zombee." The honeybees infected with the parasite have eggs laid inside their bellies, which makes them disoriented, erratic and apt to leave their hives at night; nighttime is when bees usually stay in the hive, huddling with each other for warmth.
