Honey bees that dance to give directions to flowers make more errors when performing horizontally due to gravity, say researchers. Female foragers perform "waggle runs" on the hive's honeycomb for other bees. The intricate movements display the direction and distance of the flowers from the hive. Researchers from the University of Sussex are "eavesdropping" on bees to find out more about where they feed in Britain. Dr Margaret Couvillon has spent three years decoding the bees' unique method of communication.

Southern Lakes Honey owner John Stevenson said varroa was found in Invercargill when an agriculture ministry contractor inspected a hive of a hobbyist beekeeper last week. The hobbyist sourced varroa-infested bees from Alexandra, for hobby hives in Dunedin, and then Invercargill, he said. "It's come down to Invercargill a bloody sight quicker than it should have." Mr Stevenson has 700 commercial hives spread around varroa-free areas in Te Anau and Glenorchy.

State beekeeping companies may enter the European market in a more firm manner, after an agreement signed this day between the Ministry of Economic Development (SEFOE) and the Metropolitan Technologiical University (UTM), same as an investment of 10 million pesos for develop marketing strategies, market research and providing advice to organizations in this field.
