USA- CLEAR HONEY PREFERRED BY SHOPPERS

Bill Mundy, 91, year-old only left Britain in December 1941 but ended up in Singapore’s notorious Changi jail after the Japanese overran Malaya and captured thousands of British forces. Crippled by malnutrition, Mr Mundy nevertheless managed to find time for his favourite hobby when he and a Dutch fellow prisoner captured a swarm of bees which were kept in a box in the officers’ quarters. The honey he produced was sent to the prison hospital every two weeks to help fight infection by absorbing moisture and stopping bacteria from spreading in the wounds of fellow prison inmates.

PORTUGAL- MADEIRA BEEKEEPER PRODUCE MEAD

"It is a yellowing wine, has honey flavor and feels the same alcohol content." Thus, the beekeeper Carlos Pestana define their new bet - mead - a drink made from honey bees, water and yeast. "The rest is nature," he says, pointing mead as a byproduct of honey bees and a response when there is excess product on the market.

Beekeeping has been attracting the interest of the madeirenses , who look at this activity as a contribution to the family economy, "depleted by the crisis and the austerity measures," says beekeeper Carlos Pestana
