A recent local honeybee experiment has yielded potentially valuable results that may help beekeepers worldwide. The results of the recent experiment suggest that replacement colony buildup can be dramatically accelerated by adjusting the bees’ feed, specifically the ratio of binomial and monomial sugars the bees receive.

ECUADOR- STARTED A BEEKEEPING COOPERATIVE

Peace Corps volunteer Elizabeth Clark of Coventry, Conn., started a beekeeping cooperative with 18 local families in rural Ecuador. The honey generated by the bees will be sold to local stores and provide an income for the local families. The project is funded through the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP), which raises money for Peace Corps volunteer community projects.   .

SPAIN- HONEY PRODUCTION IN ANDALUCIA

USA- SMUGLING HONEY AS RICE FRUCTOSE

Chin Shih Chou, 48, of Taiwan, Qiao Chu, 25, of China, and Wei Tang Lo, 48, of Hacienda Heights California, were named in the indictment. The trio is charged with falsely labeling the honey as rice fructose to avoid paying more than $1 million in duties to the U.S. According to court documents, the men relabeled the containers of honey after they passed through U.S. Customs. They then sold the honey in the U.S.

NEW ZEALAND- LOWER HONEY PRODUCTION

About 9000 tonnes of honey was produced in the 2010-11 season, 3000 tonnes less than the previous season (-25%). Federated Farmers says cold and wet weather contributed to the drop, along with fewer wild bees due to the varroa mite which has troubled the industry since 2000.
