Nearly a ton of Bee Honey, produced  by organic beekeepers of the region by the Bateias is, being introduced in school meals, the Municipal School of Campo Largo. Once a month, each of 13,000 school children will receive the city, three to four sachets of honey, four ounces each, along with Merenda, allowing more flavor and better nutrition

Attracted by the honey and propolis produced in the interior of Paraná, a delegation of Japanese businessmen visited Ortigueira and evaluate the possibility of importing the products. Propolis is a substance produced by bees to protect the wells and plugging the holes in the hive and also a powerful natural antibiotic used by humans. In Japan, is being used in scientific studies to produce cancer-fighting drugs.

"2011 was probably the most difficult year we've ever had," said Gretchen, the owner of Gretchen Bee Ranch in Seguin. But recent rains bode well for a better honey haul this year. The bees are buzzing around flowers that have already popped, and although honey flows won't start to peak until mid- to late April, Gretchen has already made up for last season's losses. The drought ravaged flowering trees and brush plants that the bees glean pollen from, but Gretchen said he's optimistic that this year will be a boon for beekeepers. "When we have a year like this, it not only means more honey production," Gretchen said. "We can also make more beehives."
