USA- HONEY IMPORTS MARCH 2013

In the month were imported 12,534 tons (+7.1%) for a total dollar value of 40.4 million (+19.6%) at an average price in dollars per ton of 3,225 (+11.7%). In the full year were imported  30,187 tons (+4.1%) with a dollar value of 98.2 million (+14%) at an average price in dollars per ton of 3,253 (+9.5%). All percentage values ​​refer to the same period last year.

Paul Vautour, director of the Maritime Beekeepers Association and Maritime representative on the Canadian Honey Council, said things had been looking up but said beekeepers are facing serious losses once again.  He said a declining local bee population means paying to have other hives, or colonies, brought in. Bees are essential crop pollinators, and resorting to importation can be expensive.
